Success in anything is determined by the individual. Everyone has their own definition of what it means to be successful. It may be becoming a millionaire, having your ideal spouse or landing your dream job.
The truth is what one person desires, another may not want. Ultimately, it all boils down to what we think will make us happy. Often that contentment is the driving force behind our dreams and goals.
While true happiness is the starting point for success, we can explore what that means for us and how to achieve it.
1. What do you want?
If everything in your life was absolutely the way you wanted it, what would that look like? Start by writing a list of all the things that "light your fire." If something doesn't excite you, chances are you really don't want it.
Your list should include all the things you would be doing, having and being in your ideal life. The aim here is to let yourself soar into possibility. After you have a list, choose five to ten things to start with. This allows you to challenge your mind and heart as to what is achievable!
2. Plan to win
Plan what steps you would take towards your goals. Example: you want a new house. What would it take to make this a reality? Maybe it's calling a Realtor to show you houses, calling a bank to get pre-approved for a loan, or saving for a down payment.
Write down all it would take to achieve this goal. If you are unsure of what it will take, don't be afraid to ask! People are always willing to talk about their success. Once you have all the information you need, put it into step-by-step order of what needs to happen.
3. Get prepared
Getting prepared is not the same thing as planning. Planning is like making the blue print of a house. Getting prepared is getting the contractor, the tools, equipment and supplies. Let's go back to the purchasing the house example.
You would have completed all the steps including: having your down payment, hiring a Realtor, and perhaps completed a home buyer's class etc. These things would all be in place so that when you find the house you want, you can easily move on to step number four.
4. Take action
I love Nike's quote, "Just Do It." Take action! Don't wait when the opportunity presents itself. If you have a plan and are prepared, this step is a breeze. When you wait, it gives your mind the chance to brood and you may miss the opportunity.
All your thinking should have been done in steps one through three. Remember, one of the laws of the universe is: a body at rest or in motion will stay at rest or in motion unless acted upon by force. Muster the energy it takes and "Just Do It!"
5. Expect to succeed
Expectation is the starting point for everything. Henry Ford said, "Anything the mind can conceive, it can achieve." You were the one who made the goal, planned, got prepared and took action. Now sit back and allow the fruits of your labor to come to you; expect that you will achieve your goals.
If you somehow failed, remember don't blame yourself. It was much better to have tried because now you have more knowledge and understand of what was over looked. Revisit all the steps and never give up. Life is a game that must be played.
What we all truly want is to be happy. Many times we associate happiness with having the things we want. However, true happiness is where we should start. Success at having, being and doing what we want begins here and now by choosing to be happy.
We then can choose what we want. The how will then reveal itself as we take the journey of following the steps above to succeed. Remember, our goals take time and effort. This is in the form of spiritual, mental and physical effort to make what we want a reality.
