Earlier in my life I thought success was having a lot of money, houses, cars, etc. I grew up thinking that people who had lots of money were successful and happy.
My obsession then, became to make a lot of money so that I can lead a successful and happy life. I have come to understand that success is not in the amount of wealth or property you have amassed.
So many people today are still in this error of what success is. Having a lot of money, houses, cars, etc, is a good thing but it is just an aspect of success.
You can have all the above mentioned items and more but you are not close to being successful. On the other side, you may not even have a dime in your bank account and yet you are successful.
What then is Success?
The Encarta Dictionary defines success as, "The achievement of something planned or attempted". From this definition we can infer that for you to be successful, you must attempt (to do) something.
So many people go through life without really having a blueprint of what they want, what they want to achieve. Some people think that their lives are on autopilot and so they have no control whatsoever over what happens to and around them.
Some believe God or some 'super invincible power' controls their lives and so they 'just live' because they can do nothing to change their status quo.
This school of thought is not correct and little wonder why these people keep going round circles and end up their lives miserably. You need to diverge from such because it leads only to an unfulfilled life of regrets.
Brian Tracy defined success as goals. He said, "Success is Goals and all else is commentary".
Success can thus be said to be "the achievement of your goals". In other words, if you don't have a goal or a target, you may never be successful. What will you use as a criterion to measure 'your success'?
Every human being is different and unique, so are our needs and desires. What is it that you desire? What is that thing that you want to achieve? What goals have you set for yourself?
Success means different things to different people and so you must define "your own success".
To some people, success means having a lot of money. To others, a good marriage, to another group, is attaining academic excellence, the list can go on.
Some people feel successful only when they put through a business deal; it's not just the money but the feeling that their tactics won out.
There are yet others who only feel successful when they do something with their hands; painting, drawing, knitting, etc. You need to ask yourself what it is you want to achieve. What it is that will make you feel most joyous, most alive?
Often times, people are so conscious of what others expect of them, what others will like them to think or do. They even go extra miles to pattern their lives according to some other people.
Like the movie stars, Musicians, Models, etc. these people see themselves as not successful because they are not famous movie stars, musicians or models. The biggest mistake you can make is to make someone Else's success or achievement your target.
He is an entirely different person from you; his passion is different from yours, what makes him feel most joyous, most alive is different from yours.
Trying to be like some famous star only leads to frustration and an unfulfilled life. It can only make you a number two (2) when you are designed to be the number one (1).
Forget all that fuss and think for yourself. Only you can know your meaning of success. Only you can achieve that which you were destined for. Believe in yourself and you will succeed
Ralph Waldo Emerson said, "Self Trust is the first secret of Success
You must learn to believe in yourself irrespective of what others think or say about you. You don't need their approval to be successful...
My Name is: Jacob Eric Zachariah
Success is a personal thing and only you can define your meaning of success. It doesn't matter who you are, what you have or don't have, what you've been through, what you are going through, where you come from... You can pick up from this very point and succeed.
