Success and Anxiety :

Everyone wants to be successful. If you went to the mall and took a survey of who wants to be a success in life and who wants to fail you would find an overwhelming response of people who prefer to be a success.

This is the type of response that you would probably find anywhere that you would take such a survey. The thing that varies is not that most would prefer to be successful. The thing that should vary is how being successful is defined.

Some would say that success equals attaining a high academic achievement, finishing college and landing that dream job. Others define it as becoming financially wealthy.

There are those that characterize it as nailing the perfect work out and body. Still there are those that define it as finding and marrying the perfect man or woman. The varying perceptions of what equals a high level of achievement makes my next point unquestionable.

When it comes to determining if a life is successful, one should not look to their left and to their right comparing what they have achieved to others.

What happens is that people compare others to what they see on television or the movies and decide whether or not others are successful then they turn and apply those standards to themselves. The problem with this practice is everyone has differing sets of talents, likes, dislikes, goals and abilities.

Wouldn't it be lovely if we only compared ourselves to ourselves? Making each day an opportunity to be better than we were the day before. Following our own dreams instead of trying to fit ourselves into a mold that was made for another.

Imagine the stress that would be lifted from us and the anxiety that would be eliminated if the only levels of success that we reached for were made from what we ourselves determine from evaluating our own performance and what we can realistically attain.

It is admirable to reach for success. However, it is important to be careful how we define success. It is important to keep in mind that each of us have individual talents and skills that lead to accomplishing different achievements.

Eliminating the anxiety over reaching for success in life can be easily achieved by keeping your goals realistic. It would also help if you develop a good idea of what it is that you actually want from life and set yourself to only pursue those goals.

It is very easy to compare yourself to others and decide that you are not successful only to one day realize that you have missed the mark. Not because you did not accomplish what they accomplished. But because you were so busy watching others that you did not do the things that really make you happy.
