With a world where a lot of the news and messages out there are focused on what's going wrong, bad or not working, it can be challenging to see how wonderful life really is.
During the holiday season finding the wonderful can be easy for some of us and for others it makes it even more challenging.
For myself it's pretty easy but at times when it does seem challenging I use an inspiring story to remind myself.
The most recent story was about a woman I read from Rwanda - she was giving hope to a brother of someone who died in a mass school shooting.
Her message was that you can live a happy and beautiful life you just have to train yourself everyday. This coming from someone who at eight years old watched her parent being killed by machetes along with herself being attacked and thrown in a mass grave.
She managed to pull herself out from being buried alive and got to safety where she watched her village burn and others die while she ate grass for a month until it ended.
I use this as a reminder that feeling joy and how wonderful life is has nothing to do with our circumstances. It's always something that occurs within us and is always available.
We also get to decide how we want to label those circumstances. Just like this girl from Rwanda - it starts by training yourself to focus.
We all have circumstances in our lives and things happening in the world around us but we also all get to decide what we are going to choose to focus on.
Decide that you are going to focus on what feels good and choose to not label an event (such as horrific or terrifying just leave it as a fact).
This woman chose to train herself to focus on being grateful for what she had and helped raise some of the other orphans from the genocide.
There's always evidence out there for whatever we've got our minds focused on. So if we are wanting to see a wonderful life then we need to start training our mind to see that which we deem to be wonderful.
Ask yourself this question everyday "What is so wonderful about life right now?" Because the more we ask this question, the more our minds will go searching and discovering the answer.
I like to think that if she can truly feel how wonderful life is despite her circumstances, then so can the rest of us.
