"You can have everything in life you want if you will just help enough other people get what they want." ~ Zig Ziglar
I was reading an article posted in a Zig Ziglar newsletter recently and it told the story of Dr. Menninger of the Menninger Clinic. He was asked what would he do if he feared that a nervous breakdown was coming on. He quickly responded,
"I would find somebody with a bigger problem and get involved with helping him solve his problem; in the process I would forget about my own."
I've found this philosophy to hold true in my life. I've had some down moments; probably worse moments than many other people.
I've also found that when I take my focus off of my own problems and start focusing on helping others solve theirs, I totally forget about the problems I have an a feeling of fulfillment replaces the ones of despair.
We are designed with a purpose and that purpose is not fulfilled until we find and use it to serve others. It is not easy to pull yourself out of a negative predicament. It takes a tremendous amount of effort to look outside ourselves under those life deadening circumstances.
That's why its important to have systems in place to help us not go there mentally in the first place. But even when we do fall into that state, the best way to get back on top of things is to serve others with our talents.
It is in those moments that we lose ourselves enough to realize that we can be a part of something bigger; bigger than we can be on our own.
By giving in this way we receive more than we can comprehend. The gift we get by giving in this way is something money cannot buy. And, I believe, that by doing this eventually we will be able to have most of the things money can buy as well.
Three Strategies to Get Your Mind Focused on Helping Others:
Become Curious
I was in a family therapy session the other day when my son and daughter were discussing the problems they have with each other - fairly typical brother and sister annoyance issues. My daughter indicated that she doesn't like when her brother brags, and talks about how he is so much better at doing something than she is. The therapist asked her, "Who's problem is that?"
Once she began to realize that the problem wasn't hers and it was his it changed the focus. She now became curious as to why he felt the need to brag. It no longer was her problem she needed to pay attention to; it was now a matter of helping him solve his. Through doing this a solution is provided for both of them.
It's natural to feel defensive when someone seems to be attacking you, but if we redirect that defensiveness to curiosity then we will get better results all the way around.
Get Social
Isolating ourselves when we are dealing with personal issues may seem like the most reasonable thing to do. We don't want to bother others with our problems. Getting together with positive friends and family when we're feeling bad about our problems doesn't have to be a pity party for us.
It is an opportunity to glean from their experiences and possibly share insight with them from our perspective to help them as well. By doing this we are now contributing and adding value to ourselves, which in turn gives us the new energy we need to overcome our personal struggles.
Live in Your Element
When we devote most of our time to doing what we are born to do, and doing it in a way that impacts others on a large scale we are really living a fulfilled life. I coach youth football and honestly I have better moments coaching youth football than I've had playing the game.
There is something special about sharing knowledge and expertise in a way where people get it, absorb it, and make it their own. It is awesome when someone succeeds, and you can say you've had some part in that success.
That feeling can only be achieved by contributing our talents to others; impacting them in a way no one else can. Each of us has that special gift. It is our unique element. Wake up every morning and ask the question, how can I impact someone today with my unique gifts and talents. This is the essence of fulfillment.
I truly believe that we can have everything in life we want if we are just willing to help enough people get what they want. Living that philosophy is a life long process of self mastery. There's no better path to be on in this world. Are you willing to take the journey?
